While summer is well on its way, I’ve always found that denim jackets are the perfect all year round staple. I often wear layers in the fall and winter, but in the spring and summer – they’re ideal for those chilly nights. For this project, I took a little inspiration from the blanket print trend and added some vibrant hues to a thrifted jacket. If you’re into Southwestern-esque pieces, you’ll love this!
(If you don’t have a sewing macine, you can also sew this by hand)

Supplies:
- Denim jacket
- Blanket print fabric or serape print blanket/table runner
- Straight pins
- Fabric scissors
- Thread
- Sewing machine (not shown)
I actually used fabric from a serape “blanket” table runner that I found on eBay. There are tons of sellers on both eBay and Etsy that sell fabrics in awesome blanket patterns.
1) From your fabric, cut a rectangle panel to fit the back of your jacket.
2) Pin the fabric in place, on all four sides.
3) Sew. Take your time doing this, as you’ll have to maneuver the rest of the jacket around the sewing machine.
Tip: To prevent the blanket fabric from fraying, apply clear nail polish or liquid seam sealant (such as Fray Check) along the raw edges.
The vibrant serape pattern is great for the spring and summer. I’d love to find another blanket fabric in darker hues for an autumn version.
