I call these “faux turban” headbands because they aren’t wrap around headbands made of only fabric. They can also pass for a head scarf tied around your head (because of the middle knot). In reality, they’re just conventional headbands wrapped in fabric, with a knot carefully placed. I made these because no matter how much I try, a scarf tied around my head never ever stays put (I’ll thank my super straight fine hair for that)…But regardless of your hair type, these headbands will be more likely to stay in place rather than a scarf or fabric headband. No bobby pins required, either. Learn how to make it after the jump!
Supplies:
- Wide headband
- Long strip of fabric
- Needle and thread
- Scissors
- Glue gun (optional)
I used a piece from a thrifted plaid shirt, about 7.5 inches in width and 22 inches in length. It was more than enough fabric to cover a basic headband.
1) Tie the strip of fabric around the middle of the headband.
2) Spread out the fabric on either side of the knot, so that it covers the entire width of the headband.
3) Wrap the fabric completely around the headband.
4) And sew the fabric together. I find using a whip stitch works best.
5) At the end – cut off the excess fabric, fold up and sew shut.
6) Repeat on the other side.
7) Cut off any loose threads, and you’re good to go.
I made another one with paisley fabric from a thrifted skirt. I can see myself going a bit headband crazy and making tons of these – I have SO much scrap fabric!
Enjoy. xo
