Embroidery: A Blooming Mohawk

Call me morbid, but I adore skulls. Not only are they pretty badass, but they boast such a historical, meaningful nature. Think about it. A person’s thoughts, feelings, and personality characteristics all stem from the brain that resides inside a skull. The physical features of a person are determined by the skull… from the jawline to the cheekbones, from the nose to the mouth. Basically, a skull encompasses everything about a person in a nut(bone?)shell.

Often, before stitching a photo, I’ll draw a light outline to serve as a guide. Inevitably, the stitching ends up being different than what I had originally planned. I find this to be fascinating. This mohawk of leaves was no exception; they came to life in a unique, unexpected way as they went from my brain to the paper.

In this sense, they’re not much different than human thoughts.
