diy: Barbed Wire Bracelet

By now, it’s pretty obvious that I tend to lean towards the edgier, sometimes strange elements of creativity. This project is right up that alley, using minimal supplies to create bracelet that emulates the look of barbed wire. Part of me thinks back to my angsty, teenage emo kid days, but the other part of me loves a good spin on a throwback. Exhibit A, below, pairing a barbed wire bracelet with my favorite Kate Spade bangle:
This DIY only uses craft wire, which can be found in the kids’ section of craft stores. You can use jewelry wire found in the jewelry section, but I find craft wire to be softer, more malleable and just easier to work with.
Check out the tutorial below!

Supplies:
– Jar (or Tin Can)
– Tape
– Clear Nail Polish and Nail File*
– 3-in-1 Jewelry Pliers
– Craft Wire
– Fabric Glue
*You can use the clear nail polish in addition to the fabric glue (to blunt the sharp ends of the wire), but I think using just fabric glue would work just fine!
1) Tape one end of the wire to the jar and wrap around about 6 times before cutting.
2) Pull at the end and adjust until the diameter of the wire circle can fit your wrist comfortably.
3) Wrap the ends around, like above.
4) Randomly twist the wire together, all around.
5) Cut 5-6 strands of wire measuring 1.5-2 inches long.
6) Tightly wrap around. I found it easier to hold down the end of a short strand against the bracelet, then take the other end and wrap around.
7) Adjust and trim as necessary.
8) File down the ends.
9) Add dots of fabric glue to each of the wire ends. Let dry completely.
10) When completely dried, the fabric glue will encase the wire ends and make it much easier (and safer!) to wear. I have worn mine with no problems at all.
You can make an entire set of these bracelets in one afternoon. I’m kind of obsessed with them! They’re super simple to make.
