This home décor project is perfect for the sewing loving lady in your life – whether it’s yourself or a friend! It’s also a great recycling project; I used a soup can, leftover fabric, mason jar lids and miscellaneous buttons to create this candle. You can take it even further and use wax remnants from old candles.

Supplies:
- Tin Can (10 3/4 oz.)\
- – 2 mason jar lids (from 1 qt jars)
- Fabric scissors & scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Scrap fabric
- Small pot
- Candle wax of your choice (I used soy, but you can use regular or beeswax. You can even use the leftovers from old candles that have had their wick used up)
- Long wicks (I used 9 inch wicks, then trimmed them down)
- Embellishments (I used buttons)
- Scented Oil (Optional)
- Stove
- Skewer, straw, etc (Optional & useful, not shown)
1) Peel off the can’s label. Fill the can with wax, almost until the brim. This will serve as a rough measurement – you’ll probably need a bit more than this!
2) Melt in the pot over medium heat. Watch carefully, and be sure to read the instructions on the wax’s package (unless you’re just using leftover wax from old candles. In that case, just be sure to keep an eye on it)
3) While that’s melting, hot glue the wick to the bottom of the can.
4) Place the can on a spare potholder. Very carefully pour the hot wax into the can. If you need more wax, melt and add a bit more, but be careful not to overflow.
5) The wick may bend as the hot wax comes into contact with it. I used a straw to keep the wick centered, as shown above.
Let the wax harden completely. The length of time will vary depending on the type of wax you are using.
6) Trim the wick.
7) Remove the circular portion from both mason jar lids.
8) Hot glue embellishments of your choice to one of the lids. This is to conceal the printed label (if there is one!). I chose buttons to add to the sewing theme.
9) Cut the fabric into strips.
10) Glue the end of one strip at the top, right by the can’s rim. Wrap around.
11) Hot glue the end down, then add another strip, and continue.
Repeat until the entire can is covered.
12) Hot glue the other jar lid to the bottom of the can.
13) When the candle isn’t being used, lay the embellished lid on top to create the look of a spool.
Love?…LOVE! As with many of my projects, this is a great way to use up those leftover scraps of fabric. You can even mix and match different prints or materials for something really offbeat and edgy.(PS – The Gilded Feather Art project is also pictured in this post!
